What it looks like from the equipment side

These are the faults that most often turn out to be the board. None of them prove it — that is what the diagnosis is for.

  • Pump will not start, or starts and immediately trips
  • Rapid cycling — the pump hunts on and off
  • False dry-run or low-pressure trip with water clearly present
  • Pivot stops partway through a pass
  • Controller dead after a storm
  • Readings that drift or read full scale with no signal

What actually fails, and why

Common to this class of board. The cause matters as much as the fault — a board replaced into the condition that killed it fails again.

Lightning and induced surge

A strike hundreds of metres away induces enough energy in a long buried run to destroy the input side of a controller. Protection components are sacrificial by design — they work once. Very often the damage is confined to the input stage and the rest of the board is sound.

Moisture ingress

Enclosure seals perish, and a pump house is humid year-round. Corrosion tracks along traces and under components, and it progresses for months before anything stops working.

Contactor coil driver failure

A failing contactor coil pulls more current as it degrades and takes the driver with it. Replacing the contactor alone leaves the board still faulty.

Transducer input damage

A 4–20 mA loop that gets shorted to supply, or a transducer that fails, commonly damages the input it is wired to. The board then reports pressure that was never real.

Failed protection components

MOVs and TVS diodes degrade every time they clamp. A board that has survived several storms is often running with no surge protection left at all, which is why the next one kills it.

Before you pull it

  • Photograph the board in place, connectors attached. It is the single most useful thing you can send.
  • Note the equipment make and model, and the number printed on the board itself.
  • Write down what it was doing when it failed — intermittent, heat-related, or after a storm all change what gets tested first.
  • Pack it in an anti-static bag. Bubble wrap alone is not enough.

Questions

Well pumps, irrigation, and pivot controllers — common questions

It was hit by lightning. Is that repairable?

Frequently, yes. Surge energy usually destroys the input stage and the protection components while leaving the microcontroller and the output side intact.

It is worth a diagnosis before writing it off — replacement controllers on irrigation and pivot equipment run into thousands and are often on a lead time.

Can you stop it happening again?

Partly, and it is worth doing. Repairs replace the sacrificial protection components, which are frequently already spent before the failure that finally took the board out.

What actually reduces the recurrence is upstream — proper surge protection at the panel and a decent ground. That gets flagged in the report where the board shows evidence of repeated events.

Can you monitor the pump so I know before it fails?

That is a separate service — current-signature and runtime monitoring will show a pump degrading well before it stops.

It is the same argument as the repair work: knowing early is cheaper than replacing late. Ask on the contact form.
