Symptoms

What it looks like from the equipment side

These are the faults that most often turn out to be the board. None of them prove it — that is what the diagnosis is for.

  • Box will not hold temperature, or holds it only some of the day
  • Coil icing over — the defrost cycle is not running or not terminating
  • Compressor will not start, or short-cycles on and off
  • Display dead, dim, or showing segments that make no sense
  • Ice machine stuck in harvest, or producing nothing
  • Alarm that will not clear after the fault is gone

Failure modes

What actually fails, and why

Common to this class of board. The cause matters as much as the fault — a board replaced into the condition that killed it fails again.

Welded or pitted relay contacts

A relay switching a compressor or a defrost heater sees inrush every cycle, thousands of times a year. Contacts pit, then weld, and the output stops following the logic driving it.

Relay driver failure

Driver arrays fail short or open, so the board commands a relay it cannot actually operate. The logic side tests fine, which is why this one gets misdiagnosed as a sensor fault.

Condensate and corrosion

Boards mounted where they can catch dripping condensate corrode around vias and connector pins long before anything looks obviously burnt. Often recoverable — cleaning is genuinely the repair.

Dried electrolytic capacitors

Heat from the compressor deck dries the supply capacitors. The rail sags under load, the microcontroller browns out intermittently, and the board appears to fail at random.

Damaged temperature probe inputs

A shorted or wet probe can take the input circuit with it. Replacing the probe alone leaves the board reading nonsense.

Before you pull it

  • Photograph the board in place, connectors attached. It is the single most useful thing you can send.
  • Note the equipment make and model, and the number printed on the board itself.
  • Write down what it was doing when it failed — intermittent, heat-related, or after a storm all change what gets tested first.
  • Pack it in an anti-static bag. Bubble wrap alone is not enough.

Questions

Commercial refrigeration and ice machines — common questions

The board looks fine. Is it worth sending in?

Usually yes. Most refrigeration board failures leave no visible mark — a welded relay, a dried capacitor, and a corroded via all look like a normal board under a shop light.

That is what the bench diagnosis is for. If the board turns out to be good, you pay the diagnosis fee and nothing else, and you have ruled it out for certain rather than by guessing.

Can you tell me why it failed, not just fix it?

Yes, and it matters. A board that failed because a compressor contactor is drawing too much, or because condensate is dripping onto it, will fail again — a new board included.

Every completed repair comes back with what failed and what caused it, so the underlying fault gets fixed too.

Do you need the whole unit?

No. Send the board only. Pull it, note the connector positions, and mail it.

Keep the equipment on site — a photograph of the wiring before you unplug anything is worth more than the unit.
