Symptoms

What it looks like from the equipment side

These are the faults that most often turn out to be the board. None of them prove it — that is what the diagnosis is for.

  • Display blank, dim, or flickering
  • Readings that jump or drop out over rough ground
  • Sections that will not switch, or switch on their own
  • Loss of communication with the implement
  • Unit that works cold and quits once it warms up
  • Dead after being stored over winter

Failure modes

What actually fails, and why

Common to this class of board. The cause matters as much as the fault — a board replaced into the condition that killed it fails again.

Vibration-cracked solder joints

The single most common failure on implement electronics. Heavy components crack their joints over a season of field vibration, and the fault is intermittent and motion-dependent — which is exactly why it cannot be found in a shop with the unit sitting still.

Connector fretting and corrosion

Vibration makes contacts micro-move against each other, wearing through plating, and moisture finishes the job. The board is often fine and the connector is not.

Moisture ingress over storage

Equipment parked for months collects condensation inside enclosures. Corrosion does its work through the off-season and the failure appears the first day it is needed.

Backlight and display driver failure

A dim or dead screen is frequently a driver or backlight supply fault rather than a dead display, which is the difference between a repair and a new head.

Supply damage from jump-starting and load dump

Reverse polarity or a load dump off the tractor electrics damages the input stage. Often confined to the front end.

Book it in first. An RMA number comes back the same business day, and the board arrives with the paperwork already attached to it.

Before you pull it

  • Photograph the board in place, connectors attached. It is the single most useful thing you can send.
  • Note the equipment make and model, and the number printed on the board itself.
  • Write down what it was doing when it failed — intermittent, heat-related, or after a storm all change what gets tested first.
  • Pack it in an anti-static bag. Bubble wrap alone is not enough.

Questions

Agricultural implement electronics — common questions

The dealer says it is not repairable and I need a new unit.

That is usually a statement about what the dealer is set up to do, not about the board. Dealers replace at module level because that is their process — it is not a claim that the components on it have failed beyond repair.

A cracked joint, a corroded connector, or a failed backlight driver is a repair. Worth a diagnosis before buying a replacement head.

It only fails when the machine is moving.

That is the classic cracked-joint signature, and it is findable. On the bench the board gets flexed and heat-cycled deliberately to reproduce it.

Say so on the intake form — motion-dependent faults get tested differently from constant ones.

Do you repair engine or transmission control modules?

Not currently. The work here is implement electronics — monitors, displays, rate and section control, harness interface boards.

Engine and transmission ECUs are a different discipline with different test equipment, and offering them before that is properly in place would not be honest.
