Washer and Dryer Control Board Repair — Mail-In

A replacement washer control board from the dealer often costs more than half the price of a new machine, and the board that failed is usually repairable. The failures are relays, supply capacitors, and burnt connector pins — replaceable parts. Pull the board and send it; the machine stays where it is.

What to send

Send the board, not the appliance

The appliance stays where it is. Shipping it would cost more than the repair and more than most machines are worth.

  • Send the board, not the machine — a washer cannot be shipped economically
  • Main control boards and user-interface boards
  • Inverter and motor control boards
  • Photograph the board in place before you unplug anything, both sides
  • Write down the model number off the door frame or the back panel

Symptoms

What it looks like from your side

These are the faults that most often turn out to be the board. None of them prove it — that is what the bench is for, and it costs you nothing if the answer is no.

  • Will not start, or starts and immediately stops
  • Stuck on one part of the cycle and never advances
  • Will not spin, or spins only sometimes
  • Will not drain, with the pump never running
  • Dryer runs but never heats, or heats and never stops
  • Display dead, flickering, or showing segments that make no sense
  • Buttons do nothing, or the wrong thing
  • Error code that comes back after the part named in it was replaced

Failure modes

What actually fails, and why

The cause matters as much as the fault — a board replaced into the condition that killed it fails again.

Welded or burnt relay contacts

A relay switching a motor or a heater sees inrush on every cycle. Contacts pit, then weld shut or stop making. The output no longer follows the logic driving it, so the machine stalls mid-cycle or runs something it should not.

Burnt connector pins and board traces

High-current connectors for the motor and heater overheat where a pin has loosened. The scorching is visible once the board is out, and it is the commonest thing found. Repair is replacing the connector and rebuilding the trace.

Dried supply capacitors

The board sits next to a motor and a heater and bakes for years. Capacitors dry, the supply rail sags under load, and the microcontroller resets — which looks exactly like a random intermittent fault.

Failed inverter output stage

Direct-drive machines put the motor inverter on the board. The output transistors fail short, usually taking a gate driver with them. Both are replaceable, and the rest of the board is normally untouched.

Water ingress

A leak above the board, or condensation in a damp laundry room, corrodes around vias and pins before anything looks burnt. Caught early this is a clean rather than a rebuild.

Why here

Why this bench, for a washer and dryer control board

The same bench rebuilds commercial refrigeration, HVAC, well-pump, and industrial control boards every week. A board nobody else will quote — odd, discontinued, or out of a machine no parts counter stocks — is ordinary work here.

The same faults, on equipment that runs harder

A welded relay in a walk-in cooler and a welded relay in a dryer are the same fault on a different board. Commercial equipment runs continuously, so these failures turn up on this bench first and often — refrigeration, HVAC, well-pump and pivot controls, VFDs.

Discontinued is not a blocker

A repair does not depend on the board still being sold. The components on it are generic parts and those are still made, which is why a board the dealer has dropped is usually still fixable.

Getting it to the bench

Book it in first. An RMA number comes back the same business day.

Pack it properly

  • Photograph it first. For a board, in place with the connectors still on.
  • Anti-static bag for the board. Bubble wrap alone is not enough.
  • Include the make and model, and what it was doing when it failed.

Questions

Washer and dryer control boards — common questions

Do I have to send the whole machine?

No. Send only the control board.

Shipping a washing machine costs more than the repair and more than most machines are worth.

How do I get the board out?

Unplug the machine first. The board is usually behind the top panel or the rear access panel, held by a plastic carrier and a few connectors.

Photograph every connector before unplugging it — that photo is what gets it back in correctly.

How much does it cost?

$119 flat for a washer or dryer control board.

No diagnosis fee, and nothing to pay for the work if it cannot be repaired.

My machine shows an error code for a part I already replaced.

That is a common reason boards arrive here.

A failed board output reads as a failed component, so the part gets replaced and the code comes back. The board drives the part it is blaming.

What warranty do I get?

90 days. If the same fault returns in that time, the repair is free.
