Game Console Repair — HDMI Port, No Power, Overheating
A console with no picture is usually a broken HDMI port, and a port is a soldering job rather than a new console. The same is true of most dead consoles: the fault is in the power section or a connector, not the main processor. This is the same board-level work this bench does on refrigeration and machine controls every week, which is why the port comes off and a new one goes on instead of the console being written off.

What to send
Send the whole console
Box it up as it is. Opening it makes damage easy to cause and the board has to come out properly anyway.
- Send the whole console — do not open it, and do not try to remove the board
- PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, all revisions
- Xbox One and Xbox Series S and X
- Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED
- Leave the drive, cables, and controllers at home unless the fault involves them
Symptoms
What it looks like from your side
These are the faults that most often turn out to be the board. None of them prove it — that is what the bench is for, and it costs you nothing if the answer is no.
- No picture on the TV, or "no signal" with the console clearly running
- Picture only at one resolution, or dropping out when the cable is nudged
- Bent, pushed-in, or visibly damaged HDMI port
- Completely dead — no light, no fan, nothing
- Powers on then shuts off, sometimes after a few minutes of play
- Loud fan and shutdowns under load
- Will not read discs or game cards
- Liquid spilled into it
Failure modes
What actually fails, and why
The cause matters as much as the fault — a board replaced into the condition that killed it fails again.
HDMI port physical damage
The port is soldered to the board and takes every bit of force applied to the cable. Pins bend or tear their pads, usually from the console being moved with the cable still in. Replacing the port means removing the old one without lifting pads and fitting a new one — the board itself is almost always fine.
Failed HDMI retimer or filter
Consoles put a retimer chip between the processor and the port. Surge through a damaged port takes it with it, which is why a new port alone sometimes does not restore picture. It is a separate chip and a separate replacement.
Power supply and rail faults
A dead console is usually a failed supply component or a shorted rail, not a dead processor. Capacitors and regulators are replaceable parts; the board is diagnosed by rail rather than by swapping assemblies.
Thermal paste and liquid metal breakdown
Factory thermal compound dries and migrates after a few years. The console throttles, then shuts down under load. This is a clean and re-paste, and it is the cheapest repair on this list.
Liquid damage and corrosion
Liquid leaves a conductive residue that keeps corroding long after it dries. Caught early, cleaning is genuinely the repair. Left for months, traces are gone and the outcome depends on which ones.
Why here
Why this bench, for a game console
The same bench rebuilds commercial refrigeration, HVAC, well-pump, and industrial control boards every week. A board nobody else will quote — odd, discontinued, or out of a machine no parts counter stocks — is ordinary work here.
A console is a dense board, and that is the job
Replacing an HDMI port means lifting a connector off a crowded multilayer board without tearing its pads. That is the same rework as a surface-mount repair on a drive board, and it is done here every week.
No schematic is not a blocker
This bench also designs embedded hardware and lays out boards. An undocumented board gets traced and measured rather than guessed at, which is the difference between a diagnosis and a parts swap.

Pack it properly

- Include the make and model, and what it was doing when it failed.
Questions
Game consoles — common questions
How much is HDMI port replacement?
$99 flat, including the port.
If the board turns out to need more than the port — a failed retimer, for example — you get a quote before any further work, and you can say no.
What if you cannot fix it?
You pay nothing for the work. Return shipping back to you is yours to cover.
There is no diagnosis fee on residential repairs.
How long does it take?
One to three days on the bench once it arrives, plus shipping each way.
Do I send the whole console or just the board?
The whole console. Do not open it.
Opening it can void what warranty remains and makes damage easy to cause, and the board has to come out properly anyway.
What warranty do I get?
90 days. If the same fault returns in that time, the repair is free.
Will I lose my games or saves?
Board-level repair does not touch storage.
That said, no repair shop can guarantee data, so back up anything you cannot lose before you ship it.

Other residential work
Board-level repair is the same discipline across all of it. Only the failure patterns change.
Not on the list? Ask anyway — a dishwasher board, a microwave, a treadmill console and a bench supply are the same work. Call (505) 309-0534, send a note through contact if you would rather write than call, or pick Something else on the intake form and describe it.
Before you replace it, send it.
From $99 — the full list is above. If it cannot be repaired there is nothing to pay for the work, and you cover return shipping only.
