Oven and Range Control Board Repair — Mail-In

Oven control boards fail from heat, which is unavoidable given where they are mounted. The relays that switch the bake and broil elements carry real current a few inches below an oven cavity, and they are the usual failure. A dealer clock assembly is frequently discontinued or priced past the value of the range; the board is repairable.

What to send

Send the board, not the appliance

The appliance stays where it is. Shipping it would cost more than the repair and more than most machines are worth.

  • Send the board, not the range
  • Electronic oven control boards and clock assemblies
  • Relay boards and power boards
  • Touch-panel control boards, with the ribbon still attached if it is damaged
  • Photograph the board in place, both sides, before unplugging anything

Symptoms

What it looks like from your side

These are the faults that most often turn out to be the board. None of them prove it — that is what the bench is for, and it costs you nothing if the answer is no.

  • Oven will not heat, in bake or broil or both
  • Runs far hotter or cooler than the set temperature
  • Will not hold a set temperature
  • Display dead, dim, or missing segments
  • Touch panel or buttons unresponsive, or registering the wrong press
  • Error code — F1, F3, and similar — that will not clear
  • Beeping on its own, or locking the door for no reason

Failure modes

What actually fails, and why

The cause matters as much as the fault — a board replaced into the condition that killed it fails again.

Burnt bake and broil relays

Each relay switches a heating element drawing many amps, cycling the whole time the oven runs. Contacts pit and weld, or the solder joints under the relay crack from the heat. The scorching under the relay is usually visible once the board is out.

Cracked solder joints from thermal cycling

The board heats and cools every time the oven is used. Joints on heavy components fatigue and crack, giving an intermittent fault that comes and goes with temperature — the hardest kind to diagnose in place and straightforward on a bench.

Failed temperature sensor input

The oven sensor feeds a conditioning circuit on the board. When that circuit drifts, the oven runs to the wrong temperature while reporting the right one, and a new sensor changes nothing.

Dried supply capacitors

Same heat, same outcome as every other appliance board: the rail sags, the microcontroller resets, and the oven appears to fail at random.

Touch-panel ribbon and connector failure

The ribbon between the panel and the board embrittles and cracks at the connector. Repair is the connector and, where the panel itself is intact, the ribbon termination.

Why here

Why this bench, for an oven and range control board

The same bench rebuilds commercial refrigeration, HVAC, well-pump, and industrial control boards every week. A board nobody else will quote — odd, discontinued, or out of a machine no parts counter stocks — is ordinary work here.

The same faults, on equipment that runs harder

A welded relay in a walk-in cooler and a welded relay in a dryer are the same fault on a different board. Commercial equipment runs continuously, so these failures turn up on this bench first and often — refrigeration, HVAC, well-pump and pivot controls, VFDs.

Discontinued is not a blocker

A repair does not depend on the board still being sold. The components on it are generic parts and those are still made, which is why a board the dealer has dropped is usually still fixable.

Pack it properly

  • Photograph it first. For a board, in place with the connectors still on.
  • Anti-static bag for the board. Bubble wrap alone is not enough.

Questions

Oven and range control boards — common questions

My oven board is discontinued. Does that matter?

It is the usual reason boards arrive here.

A repair does not depend on the board being available to buy — the components on it are generic parts, and those are still made.

How much does it cost?

$199 flat for an oven or range control board.

No diagnosis fee, and nothing for the work if it cannot be repaired.

Do you work on gas ovens?

The control board, yes — a gas oven board switches an igniter and a valve and fails the same way.

No gas piping or valve work of any kind is offered.

The oven runs hot. Is that the board or the sensor?

Either. The sensor is cheap and worth ruling out first.

If a new sensor did not fix it, the conditioning circuit on the board is the next thing, and that is a repair.

What warranty do I get?

90 days. If the same fault returns in that time, the repair is free.
